Ariz. school scores dispel failing labels →
This is a nice defense of Arizona schools. The gist? We do more with less funding.
Class sizes grow as school budgets shrink →
I’m lucky. My largest class this year is 34. It’s the largest class I’ve ever had. But only by two.

Controversial book to stay on reading list →
We read this book in most of my classes this past year. Why is it that the best books are the most censored? Is it because most books which contain nothing that anyone would ever object to are, as a result, not worth reading?

America's Top Public High Schools →
Corona didn’t make the list. But at least Desert Vista didn’t either. Interestingly, several schools that I tried to get hired at DID make the list (i.e. North Canyon, Pinnacle, Horizon, Chaparral, Desert Mountain).

Requiem Metal Podcast →
I’ve mentioned this to my metalhead students. This is the metal podcast co-hosted by my old friend Jason (a social studies teacher in Michigan). I don’t listen. I don’t like metal. But if you do, this is probably really good stuff.
Report Envisions Teacher Shortage Looming →
This is interesting, in light of the current teacher glut. And it raises the question: Would I return to Michigan if I had the chance?

Both of my former districts are covered in this article. TUHSD is not. I think we may be in better financial shape than most, thanks to Tempe voters last fall.
I occasionally hear some crazy stuff from my students about the president. The latest of which is this tyranny/fascism/socialism meme. You know, Obama is Hitler. It’s pretty silly. And Jon Stewart skewers it pretty decisively here.

Class sizes to increase as Tempe Union cuts budget →
At least this article makes me feel better about my chances of keeping MY job. Frankly, I’ll TAKE larger class sizes AND no 1% raise next year. I’d consider myself lucky to HAVE a job (much less a job I love), and I fear that isn’t going to change for a while yet.

This news article from back home mentions my best friend Jason, who teaches high school social studies. This may sound weird, but I am extemely jealous. I can only hope to one day be misremembered by a former student in such a condescendingly stupid way. So get to it, kids! Make me proud. :)

Listen to this short Fresh Air piece on the amazing pop music of Memphis in the early 1970s. Big Star have been a favorite of mine for almost 20 years.
